Presentation

My name is Irene Leite and I´m a Portuguese student from Oporto University. I´m graduated in communication sciences in Faculty of Letras. It was a very interesting formation , because I had the opportunity to learn about multimedia (html language, blogging, web 2.0), public relations(some marketing notions) and journalism (web, radio, newspaper, tv). I consider myself an addict in classes, conferences in order to learn more. Digital and entrepreneurial journalism are my passion. I started in 2010 a multimedia master in Faculty of Engineering at Oporto University, based on deciding a business model for a cyber journal that I created, “Som à Letra”. The first year of the master is successfully completed. As the difficulties to find a good business model to this digital media, I decided to stop my studies for one year and back on this September. The name of the thesis for now is, “Som à Letra: a civical digital media”, it explores a new business model, accompanied by civic journalism and social responsability.

Have you ever heard about a digital media that not only informs, but also teaches , entertain and helps at the same time? It exists. It calls “Som à letra”, and is a cyber journal always focussed on the reader, the protagonist. It´s all about engaging with readers, and providing a quality digital media, all in a politic of vintage and vanguards. Not only to see, hear, but also to participate. Scientific investigation is another big passion in my life, more concretely on web journalism. Social Network as facebook or twitter are becoming a truly important way of finding and creating new and faithful audience, as some studies and cases in concrete already conclude [1]. A new function, profession is created: community host. The job of engaging with those formerly known as “the audience” is in some ways becoming a new online “beat”—one in search of a simple moniker to describe what it is, the skills required, and the tasks entailed. Nathasha Lim works as a community host at TBD. That’s what I say when people ask what I do. Hearing this, they smile, sort of, and nod their heads, and then they ask again what it is I really do. By now, this routine is all too familiar—but I can appreciate why.

The beginning

Unfortunately, finding work in journalism at Portugal isn´t easy, so after finishing my last mid term at 2009, I decided to create a weblog, “Som à Letra”, that was a project for a subject that year. After a few months, I created a facebook for the “media”, and the audience increased in a fabulous way. I found my team and today I have my online journal for my happiness and pride. But still there´s a lot of work that needs to be done. All was built in community and that is the object of my thesis (for now). Now the project has social responsability, which means my intention to organize events to earn part of the money to organizations with poor children, or with child with some mental problems. I´m talking about civic Journalism. (i´m searching about it). In 2011 I made a workshop with professor Rosental Alves about entrepreneurial journalism. In that time I already talk about “Som à Letra” .It was very stimulating for my work in that time.
